And the tour makes good...

Since the tests proved successful, this is the first real post from my
phone. A quick shout out to the people at google who made java
versions of google mail and google maps, each of which has proven
invaluable during our trip. Gmail has kept me in touch after i broke
the laptop, and google maps has provided us with destinations for
businesses in places we've been when the printed phone books failed.
Anyway, it's thursday, so we must be in austria. Specifically vienna.
I lay here on the bed in the hotel room, one of the few english
channels on the tv (all english options at this hotel are news) after
our dinner and show.
Classical music has never really floated my boat, for all I appreciate
a good concerto as much as the next man, it's not something I've ever
bought other than as a gift. This show, however, was superb. A nice
selection of plain music, opera, ballet and audience participation.
The dinner which was to set us up for our magical viennese evening
was, to say the least, disappointing, much like the other meals so
far, which have failed to impress, despite individual shining moments
(the dessert of the first one was lovely).
To add to our growing trepidation we arrived late to the venue,
missing (we suspect) the first item. Sat in our seats, which we were
discreetly ushered to during audience applause, we were swiftly caught
up in the enthusiasm of the performers and whisked through a series of
items to an abrupt stop at intermission. The recital which we had
considered skipping was suddenly and disappointingly running out.
We ended up acquiring a cd and programme and an inspired interest in
the style of music.
It will be interesting to see if the cd manages to recreate the
atmosphere and promote the same level of interest that the live show
so marvellously generated.
